Dr. Berner specializes in hand surgery and is the medical director of the Hand Centers at Carroll Hospital Center and Northwest Hospital Center. He also serves as the Chief of both the Division of Hand Surgery and the Medical Staff at Northwest Hospital Center. Dr. Berner is a consultant in hand surgery at Mount St. Mary's College and McDaniel College.

Amongst his areas of interest are athletic injuries and minimally invasive upper extremity surgery. Dr. Berner has helped develop and pioneer new techniques in hand and wrist arthroscopy for treating wrist ganglion cysts and thumb arthritis. He has lectured on these topics nationally and internationally. Dr. Berner has published papers on various topics in hand surgery in peer reviewed journals. He serves on the editorial board of The Yearbook of Hand Surgery.

Dr. Berner is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in surgery of the hand. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Berner is a member of the Maryland Orthopaedic Society and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Dr. Berner graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He graduated with honors from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed a one-year internship in general surgery, followed by a four-year residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Berner completed a one-year fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York prior to joining Advanced Centers for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.
