Post Operative Instructions for Arthroscopic Surgery of the Knee

  1. Elevate your operated leg on two (2) pillows, especially for the first two days. You may prop it up on pillows or on an elevated reclining chair. Stay off of the leg as much as possible, especially the first day or two, by limiting your standing or walking.

  2. You may experience some swelling in the knee. Use ice on the knee as continuously as possible for the first 24 or 28 hours. Do not apply the ice directly on the skin.

  3. Use your crutches. You may bear weight and bend the knee as much as pain and swelling will allow. You may gradually discontinue use of the crutches when comfortable to do so.

  4. Use your prescribed pain medication as needed. As an alternative, you may use an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Motrin, if adequate and preferred.

  5. You may remove your surgical dressings in three (3) days and shower. Do not, however, immerse the leg in a bathtub or scrub your knee. After showering, dab the knee dry with a towel and change the band-aids.

  6. Check the sensation and the circulation every few hours during the first day or two following surgery.

  7. Call the office the day following surgery to schedule an appointment to see your doctor in about seven (7) to ten (10) days. Please call the scheduling secretary

    Owings Mills (410) 484-8088
    Westminster (410) 876-8077
    Eldersburg (410) 549-5780
  8. If you have any questions or problems, please call the office at the above numbers. Soreness and aching in the knee are normal; this should gradually go away. If, however, you are experiencing severe pain, a temperature above 101 degrees, marked redness around the knee or pain or significant swelling in your lower calf (the back of your lower leg), please notify your doctor immediately.

Again, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office.
