Post Operative Instructions for Arthroscopic Surgery of the Shoulder
Leave the dressing in place on the shoulder for 48 hours (2 days) following the procedure and keep it dry. Stay at home for the first 48 hours and avoid excessive activity.
Apply ice to the shoulder directly over the bandage. Use the ice for at least 20 minutes every four hours during the first few days (use only when you are awake).
Use the sling for the first 72 hours (3 days) following the procedure, and then remove the sling as tolerated. However, if you had a labral repair or a stabilization procedure, you should wear the sling at all times until your first follow-up appointment, even while sleeping.
Remove your bandage after 48 hours (2 days). Cover the incisions with band-aids. You may now shower.
Swelling and stiffness in the shoulder following arthroscopy is normal and is to be expected for the first few weeks following the procedure. Mild bruising is common.
Excessive draining or bleeding, increased pain, numbness or discoloration in the hand or forearm are abnormal and require attention. Should this be the case, please contact our office at
